A Venus Transit Over the Baltic Sea

Explanation: Waiting years and traveling kilometers — all to get a shot like this. And even with all of this planning, a good bit of luck was helpful. As the Sun rose over the Baltic Sea last Wednesday as seen from Fehmarn Island in northern Germany, photographer Jens Hackmann was ready for the very unusual black dot of Venus to appear superimposed. Less expected were the textures of clouds and haze that would tint different levels of the Sun various shades of red. And possibly the luckiest gift of all was a flicker of a rare green flash at the very top of the Sun. The above image is, of course, just one of many spectacular pictures taken last week of the last transit of the planet Venus across the face of the Sun for the next 105 years.

If you made it through yesterday’s stellar mine field of profound and disturbing alignments and cosmic events, give yourself several rows of virtual gold stars. Nonetheless, the Jupiter shift into Gemini, the two potent Mercury aspects and Chiron being motionless are still up for grabs today, even if they are somewhat subdued in effect. Volatile conditions emerge early on as the Moon parallels war-mongering and anger-generating Mars (12:03AM PDT). Try to tweak this lunar contact with the red planet into giving you a boost with a favorite sport or energizing your exercise routines. The healing vibes strengthened by Chiron overnight are reinforced by Mercury forming a trine to Chiron (8:09AM PDT). Fortunately, problem-solving and strategy sessions are promoted – thanks to the monthly Moon-Pallas union in Aries (9:10AM PDT). Flying by the seat of your pants is made easier when the Moon unites with intuition-boosting Uranus (1:29PM PDT). However, prepare yourself for unsettled conditions and surprises when the Moon and Uranus form a rendezvous in this fashion. The love boat sails for exotic ports of call this evening when the Moon makes a supportive, 60-degree liaison with Venus (8:10PM PDT). Don’t allow some shadowy energy coming from an abrasive 45-degree Mercury-Ceres link-up (10:35PM PDT) to spoil the goodwill vibes that the Moon and Venus share in common.

Herbs can be mixed and allbined to produce a “recipe” that’s just right for each of us. Since the Sun sign you were born under has such an amazing influence on your health and
well-being, using the herbs that correspond with that sign alone can be a tremendous help in
times of stress or illness. Here’s a short list of herbs that seem to be tailor-made for each of the
signs, due to their associations with both the planetary ruler and the positive qualities of that sign.
Aries – Mars
Allspice, basil, cayenne, garlic, ginger, mustard, onion, pepper.
It’s no secret that Aries is the astrological equivalent of a bullet.

obstacle by charging straight for it. The ruler of Aries is Mars, the “red”

of the herbs listed above are known for their ability to calm, heal, or

Leo – Sun
Chicory, cinnamon, goldenseal, rosemary, St. John’s Wort, sandalwood.
Your planet is the Sun, Leo, the source of life and warmth that keeps
us all alive and provides us with the energy we need to keep pursuing our
life’s quest. It makes perfect sense, then, that the bright, cheerful
sunflower would be the perfect representation of your equally bright
and happy sign. Herbs like goldenseal and St. John’s Wort are tailor-made
for you, too, since their ability to keep the body resistant to illness
and depression are well known. Mix a bit of chicory with your morning
coffee to help remove any obstacles that up.
Virgo – Mercury
Caraway, dill, eyebright, horehound, lily of the valley, marjoram, savory.
Your quick-thinking meticulous sign likes nothing better than a mental

office, solving a puzzle, or learning a new skill. The herbs listed
above are all well known for their subtle abilities to strengthen the
mind, and many can be mixed together in teas to give you a boost you
often need at the end of a long day. The lily of the valley seems
perfect for you, too, with its subtle, “clean” scent and delicate flowers.
Libra – Venus
Catnip, passion flower, persimmon, rose, sugar cane, violet.
There’s no sign as fond of pleasing others as yours, Libra, whether it’s
by saying just the right thing to bring warring factions together, or by
using your polite charm to draw the object of your desires closer. Of
course, catnip is famous for its effects on our feline friends, but its
also traditionally used in conjunction with rose petals to bring loving
relationships that last forever. Since you’re ruled by Venus, you’re
capable of being every bit as sweet as the sugar cane – but if you need
a bit of help to attract a beloved, use this potent plant (sugar cane)
that’s long been used to conjure love – sweetly.
Scorpio – Pluto/Mars
Ginseng, dill, patchouli, pomegranate, saffron, vanilla.
As fond as you are of intensity and intimacy, Scorpio, it’s no wonder
the herbs you’ll love best are famous for their use in stirring up
passion. Drink ginseng tea (or offer some to your beloved) to induce a

Explanation: As its June 6 2012 transit begins Earth’s sister planet crosses the edge of the Sun in this stunning view from the Hinode spacecraft. The timing of limb crossings during the rare transits was used historically to triangulate the distance to Venus and determine a value for the Earth-Sun distance called the astronomical unit. Still, modern space-based views like this one show the event against an evocative backdrop of the turbulent solar surface with prominences lofted above the Sun’s edge by twisting magnetic fields. Remarkably, the thin ring of light seen surrounding the planet’s dark silhouette is sunlight refracted by Venus’ thick atmosphere.

Last night’s Sun-Mars 90-degree contact is still reverberating in the ethers. Fighting with dear ones won’t lead to resolutions. Projecting anger on well-meaning associates won’t solve business conundrums. A dicey, 45-degree link from Mercury to Vesta (6:29AM PDT) adds another tone of intensity and abrasiveness to the psychic atmosphere – as well as being a reminder to be extra careful with your assets and investments. However, the universe is seeking to wave a white flag of negotiation and neutrality as the Moon in Aquarius forms flowing trines with Venus in Gemini (7:50AM PDT) and the Sun in Gemini (3:36PM PDT). Love vibrations begin to increase in wavelength. In many ways, this alliance of the Sun and Venus is simply a bold continuation of their merger yesterday. Strive to increase the value of your investments since the Sun makes a subtle and yet still significant, 30-degree rapport with Vesta (9:04AM PDT). Communications, literary and educational endeavors receive a boost nearly six hours later when Mercury makes a similar link to Jupiter (3:02PM PDT). A great time-period this evening – for problem-solving, strategy sessions and conducting fine-tuned research – is 9:26PM PDT when the Sun makes an inspirational, 72-degree tie to Pallas. Be prepared for another cosmic onslaught arriving tomorrow when the Sun squares off with the red planet Mars. This 90-degree, abrasive interaction has been building up in power for the last few days – behind the scenes – and it finally comes into manifestation on Thursday.

Transit of Venus

On June 5, 2012 at sunset on the East Coast of North America and earlier for other parts of the U.S., the planet Venus will make its final trek across the face of the sun as seen from Earth until the year 2117. The last time this event occurred was on June 8, 2004 when it was watched by millions of people across the world. Get prepared for this once in a lifetime event!

For over 100 years the main quest of astronomers was to pin down the distance between Earth and Sun (the Astronomical Unit), which would give them a key to the size of the solar system. Careful studies of the transit of Venus became the gold mine they would harvest to reveal this measure.

On June 5, 2012, we will air a live ‘remote’ webcast from a mountainside Visitors Station site near the observatories in Hilo, Hawaii. This location will give a wonderful view of the entire transit with little chance of cloud cover to a worldwide audience.
