Pet Passing Rituals

I posted Silver RavenWolf’s Pet Rite today for a reason. The reason it was the first Rite as far as a beloved animal passing I had to do. I always had my family around me and they would do the Rite for my animals. I also watched them do their own.

The first time I had an animal pass on me, I was all by myself.  It was my first hybrid wolf dog, Rocky. He died with me holding him in my arms singing to him. I felt his Spirit leave but I wouldn’t let go of him. Finally I put him gently down and said my good-byes to him. After watching my mother, aunts, uncle, grandmother, I knew he needed a proper burial. I knew bits and pieces of the ritual but I didn’t know the whole thing. So I found Silver RavenWolf’s book and I used that exact passage when my first wolf passed on.

Since that time, I adapted that Rite to my needs and hopefully made it much more formal.

Mine differs quite a bit. Let’s take a look at it……

Before you arrive, the men will go and dig a final resting place for the animal. Then like Egyptians, we wrap the body up.. When the body is securely wrapped, it is solemnly transported to the grave site.

We now all have on our ritual attire. I am gathering up what was special to the animal in the refuge. If the animal was close to me, I will include something from me on the altar. I do gather up the same amount of candles, the mint, lavender, food and a purple sash. I put all this in my wicker basket, pull my hood up and we walk up to the grave in a silent procession.

When we reach the grave, the procession surround the burial site. I take my place at the altar. I arrange all the items on the altar. I proceed to light the candles. I light the mint. I do not light the lavender and you will see why in a moment.

Next, I ask the Goddess to guide this poor creature to a happier life. Let him/her be by the Goddess side continuously. Show him/her love, love they did not know on this plane. (If it is one of our personal animals that last part is changed.)

Now I walk over to the grave, I raise the lavender to the sky. I ask it to give this creature peace. Let them know nothing but peace from now on out, in the next plane and in his/her next life. My she/him reincarnate into a world of love and nothing but peace. I gently lay the lavender across the creature.

Next, I pick up the purple sash. I raise it to the sky. I ask for blessings of protection on this simple sash. I ask the sash protect the animal to he/she reaches the love and security of our Goddess. Then let the sash be a constant reminder that he/she is part of something bigger than all of us. He is a child of the Goddess. No more cruelty, no more mistreatment, just love and comfort. I then lay the sash across the animal’s chest.

I then return to the altar and ask anyone if they have any blessings they would like to send. If so, their blessings are said.

Afterwards it is time for the Rite to end. I pick up a clump of dirt and say,

“For the earth you came,

to the Earth you shall return.”

So Mote it be!

The others are now allowed to leave if they like. I stand solemnly at the head of the grave. I chant softly as the grave is filled in. Once the gave is filled in, I give a final blessing and the leave.

Personally I think the way we do the Rite is very beautiful and has a true meaning to it. The first Rite I gave you today was to inspire you the way it did me. You see now what kind of Rite we perform. Frankly it doesn’t even resemble Silver RavenWolf’s rite at all anymore.

We all, men and women, have feminine (Yin or SO) and masculine (Yang or CHA) energies inside. But women are physical representatives of feminine energy on our planet. Unfortunately, most modern women have forgotten their original nature – a nature of divinity. This article is not about worshiping the Goddess within but about awakening divine feminine energy in your daily practical life.

Ancient women put a special sacred meaning in everything they were doing. Cooking, embroidery towels, brushing their hair, etc. was a magical ritual. Everything that women did, they charged with their energy through their prayers, manifestations, and spells. Maybe that’s why families were more harmonious and stronger, and people are healthier and happier? And maybe it’s time for us to put that knowledge back into our lives, and also begin to treat our daily household chores, responsibilities, and beauty care as sacred rituals?

When Can Divine Feminine Energy Be Awakened?

Before I start talking about the rituals for awakening divine feminine energy I would like to talk about feminine consciousness. We all should remember that every woman follows her own path and each step of this path is connected to a certain level of her consciousness. Awakening Divine feminine energy resonates with the highest level of a feminine consciousness – Bliss. For better understanding let me share with you 5 levels of feminine consciousness.

Level 1: Body

 

At this level, a woman is primarily concerned about her appearance. Her thoughts are focused on how she looks like, how she is dressed, younger or older than the women around her. She questions her weight, and body shape. She desires to look no worse than others and this is most important for her. Such obsession with her body can even lead her to plastic surgeries. She does everything to please others.

She needs the approval of her look and compliments from her family, friends, and even complete strangers. But in response, she receives only unjustified expectations and disappointments. If a woman has money then she bets on her appearance as the main value in the relationship – expensive clothes, jewelry, accessories, plastic surgeries, etc. In the case of limited finances, a woman suffers from her jealousy about good-looking and wealthy women.

No one argues that appearance is important for every woman. But if in addition to the body a woman is not interested in anything else, it says a lot about her development. If time, money and all thoughts are directed only at the body, then the search for happiness is carried out outside – in the store, in the beauty salon, which often does not help. And then a woman is faced with an unsolvable task: how to be happy if you are not so young, beautiful or you do not have expensive and stylish clothes? Such a woman only wants to receive, but not ready to give anything back.

Level 2: Vital energy

At this level, a woman already understands, no matter how you dress up yourself, no matter how you try to keep youth through various procedures, there is a more important thing – it’s HEALTH. Therefore, a woman focuses on how to keep the vigor and energy. And the purpose of fitness and massage at this level – not only to keep the body to look sexy but also to give yourself joy, care, and attention.

Women who think about their life energy, already understand that smoking is not just ugly, but harmful. They know that beautiful eyes have nothing to do with expensive mascara, but is a reflection of good health. Such a woman will look for her happiness in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, whether it be a fitness club, a tennis court, conversations with friends about a healthy lifestyle, or yoga. At this level, women quit smoking. It is noted that if a woman refused to smoke, the level of her energy increases significantly. But the female energy is not only her health but also harmony in all spheres of her life, for example, in relations with men.

Level 3: Intellectual development

 

The level of intelligence directs a woman to self-education. Reading books and constantly learning something new, she begins to understand that there are laws that operate in this world. She realizes how important it is to develop and learn the secrets of relationship. Such a woman begins to realize that getting something necessary depends on our desire to give and share. At this stage, a woman often attends many seminars, workshops, degrees, she wants to find an answer to the questions that come to her daily.

She understands that the secret of beauty, harmony, and health should be sought inside. But all this active intelligence does not answer the main question: how to be happy? A woman goes to the next seminar, buys another book, gets another degree but still cannot make the right choices and find the answers. She can give great advice to others, but at the same time, she cannot solve her own problems. This level of active mind does not allow her to realize that a lot of information is useless without it fully being integrated into herself as living wisdom and the mind can sometimes give completely different answers than the intuitive heart. She is looking for happiness through her belief of “I know how to” and activity in the outside world.

Level 4: Wisdom

This is the level that opens the path of Wisdom to a woman. We should all remember that we all have wisdom from our birth. All women are wise by nature. But unfortunately not every woman can use this wisdom. At this level, a woman begins to turn knowledge into practice and leaves the eternal bustle. She begins to feel the taste of life and savors every moment. She realizes that “a lot” doesn’t mean “well”. At this level, she learns to hear the voice of her soul.

A woman calmly perceives the authority of teachers and the success of those who have moved further than she has. She moves in her development at her own pace and acquires the ability to listen and change. She knows how to listen to a man, and not try to change him. A woman understands that our whole life is a school. And happiness is something that comes from within, from one’s own heart. But at the same time, she understands the importance of the outside world that gives us pleasure and opportunity.

Level 5: Bliss

 

This is the level of a woman with awakened divine feminine energy. This woman has a higher purpose in life – to serve and help other people.

 

How Can We Apply Ancient Knowledge to Improve Our Lives Today?

Yes, we all are at different levels of awakening divine feminine energy. But I have good news for you – no matter what level you’re at you can start applying ancient knowledge for awakening your divine feminine energy now. This is how, step by step, gradually you will develop your consciousness to the bliss stage. I’m not going to give you some complicated rituals or magical spells. All you need to do is become more conscious of everything you do in your daily life.

Main qualities of Divine feminine energy are love and compassion. The more you can control your ego, the more love, and compassion you can give to the world. Whatever you’re going to do ask yourself first: “Does it resonate with love and compassion? Is it coming from my Heart?”. If it’s not – try to change your focus from ego or negativity to love and compassion. Here are 7 rituals that you can apply to your daily “Awakening Divine Feminine energy” practice.

Ritual 1

 

Comb your hair consciously, imagining how the comb sliding through your hair removes all the negative energy and information accumulated during the day. Our hair absorbs feminine energy. By conscious combing, you’re restoring it. A woman with long hair has a very strong feminine energy and is able to create a circle of protection for her beloved man. Moreover, if you’re in a relationship you can ask your partner or husband to comb your hair. This powerful ritual creates protection for him and makes your bond much stronger.

Ritual 2

 

Taking a bath, doing cosmetic procedures or applying makeup, imagine that you are connected with the energies of Venus, which gives you youth, beauty, charm, and health. Visualize how Venus’ energy fills your skin with youth and beauty and awakens feminine energy.

Ritual 3

 

Create a love or healing “potion”. Don’t be afraid it has nothing to do with witch potions. I’m just using this word figuratively. By “potion” I mean preparing for your partner or family member a drink he likes. For doing this take the drink into your hands, visualize how the green, emerald energy of love comes out of your hands and nourishes it. And quietly whisper over the drink positive blessing words or a healing prayer. Such a “potion” will become a healing love nectar and will nourish and heal not only the body but also the soul.

Ritual 4

 

The process of cooking should be approached as a meditation, that is, to do it consciously and slowly. If a woman neglects this duty, her partner can’t feel a strong connection with her. If she cooks with her love, slowly, and her dishes are always creative, her relationship will be more harmonious and bond with her partner – strong.

Ritual 5

 

When you wash clothes or iron your husband’s (partner’s) shirts, feel his courage and strength, give his clothes the power to win, see how his business is getting better, how success, prosperity, and luck come his way. And then by wearing the clothes that were ironed with love and positive intentions he will really be able to reach all his goals.

Ritual 6

 

When you’re cleaning your house, mentally imagine how negative energy is leaving your home. Then visualize how your house is getting filled with the light of your love, joy, and magic. It is favorable to clean the house with a candle flame, to open windows, for free air circulation, to burn incense, to do wet cleaning and to grow flowers. Thus you enlist the support of all elements and gain protection.

Ritual 7

 

When you’re touching your partner, husband or a child, imagine how love energy is coming from your palms. Set your intention for this energy to heal, soothe, fill the soul of your beloved ones with divine love. These touches can work wonders!

Conclusion

Put love and blessing in everything you do. Treat everything you do as a ritual, giving it a special sacred meaning. The above rituals mainly stem from classic domestic feminine acts of nurture but the same love, compassion, and attention should be applied to the modern day woman’s career. It is in such seemingly invisible acts of a woman that her true, magical power manifests itself. This ritual will help you invoke her energy through the fire of release and invocation.

What you’ll need:
• A safe place to do a fire ritual, such as a burning bowl, fireplace, large cauldron, or empty metal trash bin
• A number of small sticks (no longer than 6 or 7 inches)
• Paper, cut or torn into strips
• A pen
• Matches or a lighter

Step ONE: Let go. First, write situations, people, thought patterns, identities, roles, habits and/or other things you wish to fully release from your life; one per each strip of paper. Be mindful that you only conduct this ritual on behalf of yourself, so you are not releasing anything for anyone else – simply your tie/cord to them or to the circumstance.

Step TWO: Create your arrows. Once you have written everything you intend to release, gently roll the strips of paper onto a stick, like you are curling the paper with a pencil. You can wrap several on each stick. Set these sticks in a pile.

Step THREE:What are you aiming for? It’s time to shoot for the stars. What do you want to be true? What do you desire? What will enter into the space that you’re creating with what you’ve just released? Write out your visions, one per strip of paper.

Step FOUR:Add to the quiver. Just as you did in Step TWO, wrap your visions around another set of sticks, several (or more) per stick. When you are complete, stack these sticks together in a separate group.

Step FIVE:Aim True. With your lighter or match, hold one of the sticks from the RELEASE pile and ignite the strips of paper. Place the stick (aka Arrow) into your burning bowl or fireplace. As it burns, carefully place the remaining release arrows into the fire. Help them ignite them if need be. Hold the intention that freeing yourself from these situations is for the best and highest good of all beings. Once all the release arrows are burned, follow suit with your arrows of vision. One by one, unleash your visions into the fire to liberate yourself from expectation and limitation as to how these visions may appear in your life. The universe/Source/Goddess/The Divine/God has much larger perspective than you or I… as humans, we nearly always dream too small. Burning your visions creates a vibrational frequency that is emitted out into the Field, and there are countless ways for resonance to then materialize. Allow for surprises. Trust.

Step SIX:Completion. When all the sticks/papers have burned and the heat is ebbing from the ashes, take a small pinch of the cinder and rub it into your palms, then gently blow on your skin. This serves to ground your vision, to bring your liberation and desire fully into your body, and completes the alchemical process that occurs when fire, air, water, and earth meet.

Step SEVEN:Gratitude. Thank your spiritual and human allies, the archetype of Artemis, Great Spirit, and/or anyone else it resonates to appreciate. You are supported in seen and unseen ways as you become your highest self here on earth. It is important to thank the beings that bring you power, comfort, guidance, and release so that you can enjoy a lifelong relationship with all that is Sacred.

Brigit is the Celtic Triple Goddess of healing, smithcraft and poetry. A Goddess beloved by the people, Brigit is a fire goddess who comes to the aid of those who call on her. You can also look to her for inspiration and help with creative projects of all kinds, as we do here. Brigit’s sacred day is Imbolc on February 1, marking the beginning of springtime and a noticeable return of the light.

The Ritual:
Result of performing this ritual: Inspiration from your Essence (Higher Self) for a creative project or a solution to a life challenge.

The creative drive is in each of us; creativity is a fundamental part of being human. You are always creating, all the time, whether you are aware of it or not! Throughout our lives, we have those projects that MUST be birthed – those projects that come with a creative urge that is so overwhelming that we can think of nothing else.

And yet – it is these projects that are often the most difficult. Risky. We wind up blocked, with sometimes years going by with our creative dreams on the shelf.

The creative projects that are closest to our soul are usually the ones that bring forward the most resistance. Use this ritual to draw forth creative inspiration from your Essence (your Higher Self or Divine self), as well as the spark and passion to start the project, or bring it to completion. It can also be used when you need to tap into your creativity for a solution to a problem or challenge in your life.

What you’ll need:
• A safe place where you can place and light a candle, such as your altar; ideally located in your creative space and where you can leave the candle burning while you are in it. A workspace or office is perfect.
• A candle in a color associated with Brigit. White, yellow and red are all traditional colors, or go with what speaks to you. 7-day jar candles are great, as you can leave them burning for longer periods of time.
• Slips of paper, for writing your creative Desires.
• A small fireproof bowl, for burning the papers.
• Matches or a lighter
• Tweezers, for holding the paper as it burns (so you don’t burn your fingers!)• Journal and pen, for capturing ideas.

Step ONE: Create sacred space however you usually do – circle casting, smudging, singing bowl, etc.

Step TWO: Charge your candle. Holding it in both hands, close your eyes and bring the energy of Brigit to your awareness – imagine her image (if you are visual), hear her (auditory) or feel her presence (kinesthetic). Call her by saying:

Aho Goddess Brigit, Bright Arrow, Goddess of the Flame, Healer, Maker, Muse. Bring me your Inspiration; connect me to the endless well of wisdom, passion and creativity. With this candle I call forward the inspiration and answers I seek, and the courage and energy to bring all of my creations to life. So more it be.

Step THREE:Light your candle, creating the flame as an extension of Brigit’s sacred flame. (This is done by simply intending it to be so. If you are visual, you might imagine Brigit lighting the candle as you do so.)

Step FOUR: Clarify your outcome. Take a slip of paper and write the outcome you wish to create – “Completed first chapter of new novel” or “Completed module of new online program” “Project plan for next launch.” (You can choose the scope of the outcome; however this exercise works best when the scope is small – “chunk down” bigger creative projects into smaller steps.)

Step FIVE:Activate inspiration. Using the tweezers so you don’t burn your fingers, use the candle to light the piece of paper, letting it fall into your fireproof bowl. Call forward inspiration from Brigit’s flame, saying:
As this paper burns, so shall I receive the exact inspiration, ideas and guidance needed to bring this project to completion.

As the paper burns, Let GO of any tension, frustration or “grasping” for creative answers. Feel gratitude in your body for the project already completed; feeling and experiencing it as done. When you are ready, say: It is done.

SIX: Expect the answer. From here, go about your life! Release any more conscious search for the solution, instead holding unshakable expectation that the creative answers you seek are already on their way to you. Leave the candle burning while you go about your activities in your creative space – this cultivates the energy of inspiration and passion. Extinguish and re-light – do not leave lit candles burning unattended! When you re-light the candle, recreate the flame by intending it to be Brigit’s flame, as you did before in Step 3 above.

Step SEVEN: Receive, take action and give thanks! Your inspiration and answers will come in while your conscious mind is occupied, so it’s crucial that you remain unattached and OUT of “churning” mode! Have your notebook handy or a way of capturing the “Goddess Winks” (Divine inspiration) that you receive, and take action on what you’ve been given by making time to create as quickly as possible, after it comes in.

This ritual is great to perform right before you go to sleep as a dream incubation ritual. Keep your notebook right by your bedside, so you can write your answers upon waking. You can also keep the candle burning on a regular basis, using the ritual to quickly call in creative solutions as needed!

What you’ll need:
• A safe, uninterrupted place
• A bell• A bowl of water
• A candle
• A rock (I use my volcano rocks)

Step ONE: Fire Feel the intensity of fire to burn away your limiting beliefs that are no longer serving you. Allow that lava to clear your body temple of anything that no longer belongs to you and is standing in the way of your life mission.

Step TWO: Water Feel a tidal wave is flooding your body and washing away all the beliefs that have been infiltrated inside of you and they never belonged to you. Allow the flood to go from head to toe and clean and clear and harmonize your body.

Step THREE: Air Imagine a tornado enter your body and allow this tornado that is standing in the way of your highest good. Any outer voices or even images. Allow the tornado to destroy it all.

Step FOUR: Earth Ground yourself into the earth. Take your rock and hold it into your hand and allow that grounding quality of earth to infiltrate and saturate your body.

Step FIVE: Feel your capacity and space inside of yourself to create.

Ritual Magick

Ritual magick is no different from any other activity that you may carry out in a systematic way. Yes, it is true, it is more formal than folk magick: you are using special tools and following a series of preordained steps based on traditional practice. But this does not mean that it has to be so complicated as to be beyond the capabilities of any normal person. You do not need special powers; and the preparation is just the same as you would do if you were redecorating a room, servicing your car or preparing your annual accounts.

When you decide to do any of these tasks, you set out the necessary equipment in advance, so you are not constantly dashing off to find what you need. You check that it is all in working order and you probably consult a reliable reference book, computer software or calculator to clarify the necessary stages and finer points of the method. And that is exactly what preparing for ritual magick is like.

First, you need to collect any relevant information; for example, you must find out which tools, herbs, candle colours, etc. you may require. Then you must check that your magical tools are charged with power. You must check whether the hour and the day are well chosen to benefit from the energies and are most aligned to the focus. If you are working with a group, you must decide in advance who is to carry the salt and other elemental substances round the circle, who will perform particular parts of the ritual, such as welcoming the Spirit Guardians.

This preparation is important, although, as I have previously said, many of the words and actions in the best rituals remain spontaneous within the basic framework. You do not even need to belong to a coven to create beautiful rituals. Indeed, practising alone, you will find that as you increase in confidence, the natural rhythm of the ritual cycle will amplify your own innate powers and you will feel angelic or devic forces joining with you as you walk around the circle and hear their voices mingling with your chants.

You should not allow yourself to be overawed, as I have been in the past and still occasionally am, by books and practitioners who vaunt their knowledge of obscure magical phrases, measure their circles down to the last millimetre and insist that only their form of working is authentic.

What matters is the actual connection you make in your ritual with the storehouse of natural and higher energies – and that can be done with a kitchen candle if the need is great and the intention pure. Ultimately, the power is within you, and as you become skilled with magick, you may find that the external form becomes less important.

However, formal magick does have its place, for a special need or for raising spiritual awareness, or for focusing magical energies through the accumulated power of tools charged and regularly used for positive purpose. Some people believe also that in ritual you tap into the energies of all those before you who have created circles of power and protection, and within them have raised and called upon the elemental qualities to bring desires and needs from the thought to the material plane.

The Tools Of Ritual Magick

Formal ritual magick requires its own special tools. These may be real or symbolic.

The list I give here is intended only as a guide: some of these may not be relevant to your own way of working. I have listed the areas of the circle in which each tool is traditionally placed. There are many sources of magical tools and, as I mentioned in the section on spells, you may already have a number in your home. You do not need to spend a great deal of money unless you wish, but I would suggest that you take time in finding the right items. Even if you work in a group, you may like to build up a set for your own personal work.

Some people prefer to make their own magical tools and this certainly does endow them with energies. I have suggested books that tell you how to make your own candles for special ceremonies and even your own knife. Woodcarvers are an excellent source for small staves suitable as wands and will often make items to order. In time, you will build up a collection of items and by personalising and charging them, you make them not only powerful, but also your own.

Keep your magical tools in a special place, separate from your everyday household items, wrapped in a natural fabric. You can buy excellent hessian bags and may wish to keep fragile or items that will scratch in separate ones. You can also use silk. Secure your bags with three protective knots.

You may have heard various warnings about needing to destroy charged tools on the demise of the owner, and the dire consequences of their being touched by any outsider. This is real late-night-cinema stuff. But common sense dictates that you should not leave knives, sharp wands, etc. where children might harm themselves and on the whole it is better to keep magical items away from the curious and the sceptical.

There is really no reason why you should not use your kitchen knife for cutting vegetables and then, after a quick purification in water or incense, chop herbs in an impromptu spell, or open your circle with it. But on the whole it is better to keep a separate knife for your special ceremonies.

I believe that even formal tools are like electrical devices that are lying unplugged and unused: they contain the potential to help or harm only if misused. What is more, without your personal vibes, which act as your password, the power cannot flow; you have not created an independent life form.

The following tools are commonly used in formal magick.

The Athame
An athame is, quite simply, a ceremonial knife. It is one of the ritual tools that entered the tradition through the influence of magicians and witches who set out the wisdom, mainly at the beginning of the twentieth century and in the upsurge of covens during the 1950s. Gerald Gardener, one of the founding fathers of Wicca, considered ritual knives and swords of prime importance in modern formal witchcraft.

You can obtain an athame from a specialist magical shop, but as I said before, any knife – even a letter opener – will do, although it should preferably have a silver-coloured blade. Athames are traditionally double-edged and black-handled, but a single-edged blade is better if you are new to magick, to avoid unintentional cuts.

There is a vast array of scouting and craft knives available, with black wooden handles on which you can engrave magical symbols such as your zodiacal and planetary glyphs with a pyrographic set obtained from an art shop. You can also paint moons, stars, spirals, suns, or crosses with silver paint. I use a curved-bladed knife with a silver engraved scabbard, which I bought from a souvenir shop in Spain.

The athame is set in the East of the altar and represents the element of Air. Like the sword, it is traditionally used for drawing magical circles on the ground and directing magical Air energies into a symbol. When you are casting a circle, you can point your athame diagonally towards the ground, so that you do not need to stoop to draw (which is not very elegant and bad for the back). With practice, the movement becomes as graceful as with a sword.

The athame can also be used as a conductor of energy, especially in solitary rituals, being held above the head with both hands to draw down light and energy into the body. This uses the same principle as that of arching your arms over your head to create a light body as described on page 124. One method of releasing the power is then to bring the athame down with a swift, cutting movement, horizontally at waist level, then thrust it away from the body and upwards once more to release this power. If others are present, direct the athame towards the centre of the circle. After the ritual you can drain excess energies by pointing the athame to the ground.

An athame may be used to invoke the elemental Guardian Spirits by drawing a pentagram in the air and for closing down the elemental energies after the ritual. With its cutting steel of Mars, it is effective in power, matters of the mind, change, action, justice, banishing magick, protection and for cutting through inertia and stagnation. The athame is sometimes also associated with the Fire element.

If you don’t like the idea of a full-sized athame, there are some lovely paper knives in the shape of swords or with animal or birds’ heads.

Some covens give each of their members a tiny athame, to be used for drawing down energies during ceremonies. The main athame is used by the person leading the ritual who may draw the circle, open all four quarters and close them after the ritual.

An athame with a white handle is used for cutting wands, harvesting herbs for magick or healing, carving the traditional Samhain jack-o’-lantern, and etching runes and other magical or astrological symbols on candles and talismans. Some practitioners believe that you should never use metal for cutting herbs but instead pull them up, shred them and pound them in a mortar and pestle, kept for the purpose. Pearl-handled athames are considered to be especially magical.

The Sword
Like the athame, the sword stands in the East of the circle as a tool of the Air element. Swords are the suit symbol of Air in the Tarot and are also one of the Christian as well as the Celtic Grail treasures.

Each of the Tarot suits and the main elemental ritual items in magick, represented by these four suits, is associated with one of the treasures of the Celts. The treasures belonged to the Celtic Father God, Dagda, and are said to be guarded in the Otherworld by Merlin. There were 13 treasures in total, but four have come into pre-eminence in magick and Tarot reading.

These four main sacred artefacts – swords, pentacles, wands and cups, or chalices – have parallels in Christianity and were associated with the legendary quest of the knights of King Arthur, who attempted to find them. The Grail Cup was the most famous of these. The Christian sword of King David, identified in legend with Arthur’s sword Excalibur, appears in Celtic tradition as the sword of Nuada whose hand was cut off in battle.

With a new hand fashioned from silver, he went on to lead his people to victory. According to one account, the Christian treasures were brought in AD 64 to Glastonbury in England by Joseph of Arimathea, the rich merchant who caught Christ’s blood in the chalice as He was on the cross and took care of His burial after the crucifixion.

Some present-day, peace-loving witches, myself included, do not really like the concept of using swords, even though they are pretty spectacular for drawing out a circle on a forest floor, and swords are rarely used in home ritual magick. If you do want to use one, however, you can obtain reproduction ceremonial swords.

The sword is the male symbol to the female symbol of the cauldron, and plunging the swords into the waters of the cauldron can be used in love rituals and for the union of male and female, god and goddess energies as the culmination of any rite. However, the chalice and the athame, or wand, tend to be used for the same purpose, unless it is a very grand ceremony.

The Bell
The bell stands in the North of the circle and is an Earth symbol. It is an optional tool and can be made from either crystal or protective brass. Best for magick is the kind that you strike.

The bell is traditionally rung nine times at the beginning and close of each ritual; the person ringing the bell should stand in the South of the circle, facing North. (Nine is the magical number of completion and perfection.) It is also rung to invoke the protection of angels or the power of a deity and in ceremonies to welcome departed members to the circle. You can also sound the bell in each of the four elemental quadrants, before creating the invoking pentagram, to request the presence of each elemental guardian. It can also be sounded as you pass your chosen symbol around each quadrant of the circle. However, you should not use the bell to excess – it is better under-utilised.

The Broom
The broom, or besom, was originally – and still is – a domestic artefact. It represents magically the union of male and female in the handle and the bristles and so is a tool of balance. Brooms have several uses in magick. A broom is sometimes rested horizontal to the altar to add protection, and couples jump over one in their handfasting ceremony. Most important, you should use your broom to cleanse the ritual area before every ritual.

Brooms are easily obtainable from any garden centre (you want one in the traditional ‘witches’ broomstick’ shape, not an ordinary brush). Brooms made with an ash handle and birch twigs bound with willow are traditionally recognised as being especially potent, being endowed with protective and healing energies. Some practitioners carve or paint a crescent moon at the top of the handle, others decorate theirs with their personal ruling planetary and birth sign glyphs entwined.

When cleansing the area for rituals, you might like to scatter dried lavender or pot pourri and sweep it in circles widdershins, saying:

Out with sorrow, out with pain,
Joyous things alone remain.

You can also sweep areas of your home such as uncarpeted floors, patio paths and yards to cleanse the home of negativity. Remember to sweep out of the front door, away from the house and eventually into the gutter, or if in you live in a flat, you can collect the lavender and dust in a pan and send it down the waste disposal unit.

You may also wish to cleanse the area further by sprinkling salt and pepper dissolved in water after sweeping. If you are working on carpet, you can use a very soft broom (some modern witches even hoover in circles widdershins and sprinkle the area with water in which a few drops of a cleansing flower essence, such as Glastonbury Thorn, has been added).

The broom is an Earth artefact.

The Cauldron
The cauldron is the one ritual tool that is positively charged by being the centre of domestic life and can replace the altar as a focus for less formal magick spells. If you can obtain a flameproof cauldron with a tripod, you can, on special occasions such as Hallowe’en, light a fire out of doors and heat up a brew of herbs and spices in the cauldron. When not in use, you can keep your cauldron filled with flowers or pot pourri.

If your circle is large enough, you can place your cauldron in the centre. Then, if you are working in a group, form your circle of power around it, so that the altar is within the outer consecrated circle and you make a human inner circle with the cauldron as the hub. If you are working alone, you can have your altar in the centre with the cauldron in front of it. Alternatively, you can have a small pot or cauldron in the centre of the altar.

Experiment with the different positions both for group and solitary work and walk or dance your way around to work out the logistics. Some practitioners do not use a cauldron at all.

In your rituals, you can light a candle in front of the cauldron, fill it with sand in which to stand candles, or surround it with a circle of red candles to represent Fire. Wishes written on paper can be burned in the candles. Water darkened with mugwort may be placed in the cauldron, especially on seasonal festivals such as Hallowe’en and May Eve, and white candle wax dripped on the surface to create divinatory images that offer insights into potential paths.

You can cast flower petals into the cauldron water to get energies flowing. For banishing, add dead leaves and tip the cauldron water into a flowing source of water. You can also burn incense in the cauldron if this is the focus of a ritual.

The cauldron is a tool of Spirit or Akasha, the fifth element.

The Chalice
The chalice, or ritual cup, used for rituals is traditionally made of silver, but you can also use crystal, glass, stainless steel or pewter. The chalice represents the Water element and is placed in the West of the altar. Like the sword, it is a sacred Grail treasure and is a source of spiritual inspiration.

The Grail cup is most usually represented as the chalice that Christ used at the Last Supper, in which His blood was collected after the crucifixion. As such, it signifies not only a source of healing and spiritual sustenance, but also offers direct access to the godhead through the sacred blood it once contained. Tradition says that the original Grail cup was incorporated by Roman craftsmen into a gold and jewelled chalice called the Marian Chalice after Mary Magdalene. In Celtic tradition, it became the Cauldron of Dagda.

In rituals, the chalice can be filled with pure or scented water with rose petals floating on top. I have also mentioned its ritual use with the athame in male/female sacred rites, as the symbolic union of god and goddess that has in many modern covens replaced an actual sexual union (that now tends to occur in privacy between established couples only).

The chalice is also central to the sacred rite of cakes and ale that occurs at the end of formal ceremonies – the pagan and much older equivalent of the Christian holy communion. The offering of the body of the Corn God is made in the honey cakes on the pentacle, or sacred dish, and the beer or wine in the chalice is fermented from the sacrificed barley wine. In primaeval times, actual blood was used to symbolise the sacrifice of the Sacred King at Lughnassadh, the festival of the first corn harvest. The rite goes back thousands of years.

The cakes and ale are consumed by the people acting as High Priestess and Priest in a dual energy rite or by those initiated in those roles. Crumbs and wine are first offered to the Earth Mother or poured into a libation dish (a small dish for offerings). Then the priestess offers the priest a tiny cake and then takes one herself and he offers her the wine before drinking himself. The dual roles work just as well in a single-sex coven. The cakes and ale are then passed round the circle and each person partakes of the body and blood of the Earth, offering a few words of thanks for blessings received.

In some groups each person has an individual chalice set before them, but everyone still drinks one after the other, offering thanks, unless there is a communal chant of blessing before drinking.

The chalice can be filled with wine or fruit juice or water, depending on the needs and preferences of the group.

The cakes and ale ceremony and the male/female chalice rite can both be easily incorporated into a solitary ritual.

The Pentacle
The pentacle is a symbol of the Earth and is familiar to users of Tarot packs. It is placed in the North of the altar.

It consists of a flat, round dish or disc, engraved with a pentagram within a circle. The pentacle has been a magical sign for thousands of years. The five-pointed star of the pentagram within it is a sacred symbol of Isis and the single top point is considered by many to represent the Triple Goddess.

You can place crystals or a symbol of the focus of the ritual or charged herbs on the pentacle to endow it with Earth energies. It can then be passed through the other elements or empowered by passing over the pentacle incense for Air, a candle for Fire and burning oils or water itself for the Water element.

The pentacle can be moved to the centre of the altar once the symbol on it has been fully charged. It is very easy to make a pentacle of clay, wood, wax or metal, and on it mark a pentagram with the single point extending upwards. This is what you might call the all-purpose pentagram – drawn this way it always has a positive influence.

You might also like to make a larger pentacle for holding the tiny cakes for the cakes and ale ceremony. You can find special recipes for these cakes in books but any tiny honey cakes will serve well.

The Wand
The wand is a symbol of Fire and should be placed in the South of the altar.

The wand is sometimes represented by a spear. Both the wand and spear, like the athame and sword, are male symbols. The spear, another Fire symbol, is not used in magick, except occasionally in the form of a sharpened stick in sacred sex rites, when it is plunged into the cauldron or the chalice as a symbol of the sacred union of Earth and Sky, Water and Fire.

The wand is traditionally a thin piece of wood about 50 centimetres (21 inches) long, preferably cut from a living tree (some conservationists disagree unless the tree is being pruned). After a strong wind or in a forest where trees are being constantly felled, it is often possible to find a suitable branch from which the wand can be cut. It should be narrowed to a point at one end and rubbed smooth.

You can make a series of wands from different woods for your ceremonies.

Ash is a magical wood, associated with healing and positive energies.

Elder wands are symbols of faerie magick and so are good for any visualisation work.

Hazel comes from the tree of wisdom and justice and is linked with the magick of the Sun. The wand should be cut from a tree that has not yet borne fruit.

Rowan is a protective wood and so is good for defensive and banishing magick.

Willow is the tree of intuition and is said to be endowed with the blessing of the Moon.

You can also use a long, clear quartz crystal, pointed at one end and rounded at the other, as a wand. In its crystalline form, especially, the wand is used for directing healing energies from the circle to wherever they are needed.

The wand is used for directing energies and for making circles of power in the air – hence the image of the faerie godmother waving her wand – deosil for energies to attract energies and widdershins for banishing. It can be used to draw pentagrams in the air at the four quarters and it can also be used for drawing an invisible circle when you are working on carpet or another fabric that cannot be physically marked.

In some traditions, the wand is a tool of Air and so this and the athame, or the sword, are fairly interchangeable. However, the wand seems more effective for casting and uncasting circles, invoking quarters and closing power. It is also particularly good for directing energies in rites of love, healing, fertility, prosperity and abundance.

Note: East – Air; South – Fire, West – Water, North – Earth

Early Preparations

Candles for the ritual will be made that day. Celebrant will make two white candles. Candles will be herbal and scented, and inscribed appropriately. Celebrant and mother will also bring something that symbolically (to them) symbolizes the rite of passage.

Ritual baths will be taken prior to ceremony, with Celebrant’s bath being drawn for her. Salt, herbs and scents appropriate to the occasion will be added to the bath, and it will be blessed prior to use. Mother will help Celebrant to the bath, where she will light a candle and incense, give words of love and comfort and instruction to the Celebrant, and then withdraw to assist in Circle Preparation.

Circle Preparation

Circle area will be cleansed and Circle constructed and consecrated in the usual manner. Altar will sit just West of Center of Circle to symbolize both the emotional aspects of the ritual, as well as the death/ rebirth aspects.

Added to altar arrangement will be the Celebrant’s two white candles. Also on the altar will be a mirror sitting behind and between the two white candles. Symbolic gifts will be placed beside the altar – the mother’s to the North symbolizing steadfastness, grounding, caution, and wisdom of the elder. The Celebrant’s will be to the South of the altar, symbolizing the fire, passion and impetuosity of youth.

Invocations

Guardian of the East Hail to thee, Ancient ones of Air! Blow soft around us this night That the restrictions and pains of childhood Will be but memories in the mind of the adult.

Guardian of the South

Hail to thee, Ancient ones of Fire! Lend to us this night your passion and strength Envelope us in your warmth, That the fires of youth may be tempered within thee.

Guardian of the West

Hail to thee, Ancient ones of Water! Wash over us with thy loving embrace That the sorrows of days long past Can give way to new understanding.

Guardians of the North

Hail to thee, Ancient ones of Earth! Stand firm with us in our purpose this night, That from the youth shall grow the adult Full of purpose and wisdom.

Invocation to the Lady

Blessed Lady of a Thousand Names, You who art Maiden, Mother and Crone. Grant that this night the bindings of childhood will be broken And the bond between mother and daughter be strengthened. For the two, as so reflected throughout all creation, Are but images of thee in thy divine Trinity. Blessed Be. In honor of thee do I pour this toast, and drink this wine.

Invocation to the Lord

Great Lord, Ancient one of the fields and Consort to our Lady, We ask that thou wouldst give a measure of your love and protection to she who will soon join the battles of this life. Fill her with the knowledge of thee as sanctuary And grant that peace may follow her always. In honor of thee do I pour this toast, and drink this wine.

Chalice is then passed to each of the coveners to share in the toast.

Drawing Down the Moon

Priestess/Mother stands facing the moon with hands upraised and palms turned upwards, cupwise. Drinking in the Lady’s essence, she says,

Come to me and fill me with thy light Enter me, shine in me your fullness That I may use your power for my good, And for the good of All.

When appropriate, she blesses all within the Circle, and the rite that is about to be performed. Then, nodding to the Father of the Celebrant, says:

Bring forth your daughter, that she might, this night, cross the threshold of adulthood.

Father brings the Celebrant to the Eastern Gate.

Mthr:

Is this the daughter I bore so many years before? Nay, it cannot be, for she was but a child when last I held her.

Dtr:

Mother, I am your child. Now grown and ready to throw away the things of childhood. Years it has been since my moonflow began and I became a woman. Now it is time that this is recognized.

Mthr:

Very well, lead the child into the center of the Circle. There to have her sit in silence.

Father leads Celebrant to the center of the Circle, while mother re-closes the Circle. She then joins her daughter in the Circle’s center, saying:

Mthr:

You sit now in the Center of the Circle; that which is known as the Cauldron of Hecate; the point of transformation; the mother’s womb, where beginnings end and endings re-begin. I have heard your words, and weep for them; Tears of both joy and sorrow. It was my body that cried out in pain and joy as you were born. It was my mind that went in circles to provide for us. It was my heart that broke when that which you wanted I could not give you. But always did you have my love…and always shall you carry that love with you. Behold in me the Three-Fold Goddess She who is One in Three – Maid, Mother, and Crone One in Three, as she is in you and all women, And as you and they are in her. Look upon her and know her, That you, too, may be whole. So I ask thee truly, art thou ready to face the woman within thee? To see within thee the light and dark, and fear no more the dark? To accept that which you are, and strive for that which you can become? To leave behind the things of childhood, But to continue to love and nurture the child which lives in all adults?

{Celebrant has answered accordingly to each of the questions, at which time the Mother now exhorts the Celebrant to stand and face the altar.}

Mthr:

Daughter, I ask you now to look deep within the mirror. See yourself reflected there. Look into your eyes and know yourself. Repeat after me: “I come to commune with my Soul.”

Dtr:

I come to commune with my Soul.

Mthr:

Look into the reflection of your eyes, and name one thing about yourself that you love.

{Celebrant and Mother will continue this, alternating between what the Celebrant thinks is both good and bad within her…}

After the last question, the Mother then says:

Mthr:

Daughter, within thee is both light and dark. Know always your shadow side. If something is there which offends thee horrible, give it up. For others to love you as an adult, you must love yourself first. And loving yourself means giving up any self- hatred you’ve carried over from young years. Now is the time to cut these things from thy life. They are the bonds of childhood which have held you limited. Free yourself from them, and know that thy spirit flies free.

Now look again into the mirror. Look at yourself with love. See the Goddess shining within thee. She is strong; no man has dominion over her. She knows herself and loves herself. She will give herself to those who are worthy of her affections, and turn from those who try to debase her. Let the Goddess within thee shine through thee, that the nobility and strength of woman is clear for all to see.

Now, come with me.

Mother embraces daughter and leads her to each of the four quarters. After each challenge, the Celebrant must answer as she sees fit, and asks the Guardian’s Blessing. The Covener at each gate will then bless the Celebrant, and offer a gift for adulthood, such as strength, courage, etc…or a physical gift pertinent to the rite and Gate.

Covener at Eastern Gate:

Hold! I am the wild wind and fury of the storm! That which buffets thee without shelter. How will you survive?

Covener at Southern Gate

Hold! I am fire and passion That which will consume thee with lust. How will you survive?

Covener at Western Gate

Hold! I am floods and weeping and gnashing of teeth. I am loneliness and frustration. How will thee survive?

Covener at Northern Gate

Hold! I am chaos and turmoil Plans gone wrong and dreams that die. How will thee survive?

Mother faces daughter (Priestess mode ON here)…

I am the Lady, thy Mother… I shall be with thee no matter how far thou shalt roam. And when loneliness besets thee, Thou needs only gaze upon the moon, To see my face and my love reflected there to you.

Father approaches daughter and turns her to face him…

I am he who is father to thee now. I shall stand behind and beside thee always. And when loneliness besets thee, Thou needs only to step out into sunlight To feel my warmth and love within thee.

Mother takes daughter by hand and returns to the altar. Daughter picks up her gift of childhood and presents it to the mother, saying…

This I do give you as a symbol of childhood now behind me. Hold it and cherish it as you remember me.

Mother picks up her gift of adulthood and presents it the Celebrant, saying…

This I do give you as a symbol of your adulthood, and my recognition of it. Hold it and cherish it as you remember me.

Draw a pentagram above the celebrant, with an affirmation at each of the five points:

Point one:

In the name of Inanna, Queen of Heaven

Point two:

In the name of Athena, warrior Goddess, but also of Peace

Point three:

In the name of Astarte, warrior Goddess, and protector of young females

Point four:

In the name of Diana, she of the bow and arrow, Goddess of Light

Point five:

Do I bless thee, and call thee “Woman”. May their strength and independence, their love and virtue, be thine all the days of thy life. I recognize the child no more, but she the child who lives in all of us.

Mother stands with a space between her and her daughter and presents the new adult to the coven.

Kitchen Alchemy

 

Kitchen alchemy is really a very simple form of magickal work: it doesn’t require circle casting or the invocation of elements, and you don’t even need to use a spell for most basic everyday dishes. (You may want to use one of the truly important occasions, like having your boss to dinner or the first meal you cook for a new lover, but that’s up to you.)

Like all magick, kitchen alchemy is primarily a matter of intent, focus, and will. You start by choosing your intention–increasing prosperity, for instance, or creating an atmosphere of love and peace in your home. Then, as you are cooking, you add the magickal ingredients you have chosen to use while focusing on your intention and directing your will into the dish. As with other magickal workings, the more intent, focus, and will you bring to your food preparation, the more effective your kitchen alchemy will be.

Almost everything in your refrigerator and kitchen cabinets has some magickal association. Here are a few of the most common and easiest to integrate into everyday meals. These associations are based primarily on “Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Wicca in the Kitchen”– if you only get one resource. I highly recommend this one. But different sources gives various other associations; always follow your own internal wisdom when it come to witchcraft.

Basil:  love, protection, prosperity

Beans:  prosperity, sexuality

Black pepper:  protection, purification

Cayenne pepper:  energy, creativity

Chocolate:  love, prosperity

Cinnamon:  love, psychic awareness, prosperity

Morning Ritual To Get Back In Touch With The Elements

Morning Ritual

This ritual can be used to get back in touch with the elements. Have a representation of each element around you.

Go outside if possible, face North and say:

“Good morning Spirits of the North.
I am successful
The cornucopia showers blessings into my life.”
 

Stand for a moment and let the energy of the Earth pour into your body and soul.

Turn to the East and say:

“Good morning Spirits of the East
I am creative
I am the spirit of the wind
My mind soars to other realms and back again.”
 

Turn to the South and say:

“Good morning Spirits of the South
I am passionate
I am the glow of the flame and lava
I magnetize and inflame the senses as I heal.”
 

Turn to the West and say:

“Good morning Spirits of the West.
I am beautiful
My blood contains the tears of the Mother
I am joy and hidden depths transcend from the Moon.
 

Look to the Sky and say:

“Good morning Spirits of Spirit I am balance
My body, mind, and spirits are in harmony
I stand in the center of my web, weaving.
Good morning Lord and Lady
I am your son/daughter/child
Guide me and guard me throughout this and every day.”

Stand for a moment and feel yourself coming to a place of balance. When you are ready salute and begin your day. You don’t need to cast a circle and this takes about 10 minutes.
