THE ELDER FUTHARK
This is the oldest Futhark – the European common heritage. We don’t know for sure when or by who it is originated, but it might be among Germanic tribes in the beginning of our era.
The Elder Futhark has 24 runes. This “runic alphabet” got its name after the sound of what is traditionally held to be the six first runes in this “alphabet”:

To make an herbal cleansing bottle, pour a layer of sand in a large clear bottle. Add layers of dried herbs, one at a time: first rosemary; then lemon peel, sage, cedar, black peppercorns, lavender, dill, bay leaf, and rowan.
When the bottle is full, focus cleansing protective energy into the herbs and sand, and see a golden light radiating from the bottle.
Visualize the herbs driving away negative influences.
Cork and seal the bottle with white wax.
Using a permanent marker, draw the Algiz rune on one side of the bottle, and on the other side draw a pentagram.
Set the bottle near your front or back door, and every six months, uncap, pour herbs out into the woods or your compost heap, and thoroughly wash and dry the bottle before filling it with a new round of herbs.
Algiz can be easily recognized as the antlers of the elk that it represents. The elk can represent victory, but is much more appropriately associated with the thrill of the hunt itself. This rune therefore can portend vigor and success in active endeavors. Also, this rune seems symbolic of a hand with outstretched fingers – a protective hand. This hand may suggest that you will be shielded from things negative – the problems still exist, you are spared the brunt of their force.
The runic half-month of Algiz (or Eohl) starts on January 28. It is thought to invoke the protection of a higher being, mainly because the appearance of the rune evokes the image of a person standing with his or her arms raised heavenward, as if imploring, or a else a hand whose palm is facing upward or outward, as if warding off an aggressive force. Two alternative meanings are the of “elk” and “elk sedge,” i.e., a prickly type of marsh grass, but even if interpreted as such, the primary meaning of both still implies self-defense or protection.

Available from Islamic outlets, this representation of the hand of the Prophet Muhammad’s daughter (the thumb denotes her father) represents Allah and the Five Pillars of Islam. Its palm often incorporates an eye that is said to deflect the malign energies conveyed by the evil eye.
