Daily OM for July 3rd – Laying Our Burdens Down

.Laying Our Burdens Down
The Feet of the Divine

by Madisyn Taylor

Lay your burdens down at the feet of the divine and feel the relief from your heart.

We all know the feeling of walking through life as if we are carrying the huge burden of our worries and stresses on our backs and shoulders, struggling to keep moving forward. There is no real way to move freely and fluidly in such a situation, and we are all longing to lay our burdens down. Just imagining that it would be possible to do such a thing can be enough to elicit a sigh of relief and a feeling of lightness.

The human imagination is a powerful tool, and we can use it to take journeys to faraway places without ever leaving our home. Because of this, we too can lay our burdens down at the feet of a divine being such as the great Mother, Buddha or a mountain. Releasing ourselves from that which we can’t handle on our own. No matter how smart we are, how capable we are, or how hard we work, no one can single-handedly cope with all the worries that we tend to take on in the course of our lives. And, we aren’t designed to do so. Our wellbeing depends upon our ability to hand over that which we can no longer carry by ourselves.

Visualizing yourself carrying your burdens to the feet of someone or something much bigger than you can be a powerful daily practice. To begin, sit with your eyes closed and envision an all powerful, supremely comforting being in what ever form that takes for you, standing at the end of a road. See yourself carrying a large sack, box, or other container, imagining that all your worries are inside it. Watch as you make your way to the being of your choice, and lay your baggage down at their feet. Allow yourself to feel the lightness and relief of this action, express your gratitude, and surrender. You will be amazed by how this simple meditation can liberate you from a burden you were never meant to carry.

Protect Yourself: Home Sunburn Remedies

The 4th of July is just around the corner, which means the kick off to  sunburn season. Between lying on the beach and standing by the BBQ, a burn could  be the difference between 10 and 30 minutes in the sun! Your skin is damaged no  matter the severity of the burn and it’s smart to let it relax a little with  these clever, home care remedies.

Cool it down with running cold water or a soaked cloth or keep it moist with  a dose of witch hazel.

Most people know about aloe vera, and its always nice to have a plant around you  can clip a stem from, but what about lavender or vitamin E oil? Lavender oil can  help relieve and prevent peeling and E oil is an incredible moisturizer.

Check your kitchen for the following items: oatmeal, apple cider vinegar, milk, yogurt, honey and tea. All have soothing qualities that when applied  to burnt skin can really help out. With the vinegar or tea, you can add them to  your cooling bath and let it really soak in all over.

Of course, sunscreen and a hat or umbrella will do a world of wonders in  prevention.

Daily OM for June 4th – Prayer and Meditation

Prayer and Meditation
Asking and Receiving

by Madisyn Taylor

Meditation and prayer can offer us different experiences and both can be powerful tools.

Prayer and meditation are similar practices in that they both offer us a connection to the divine, but they also differ from one another in significant ways. Put simply, prayer is when we ask the universe for something, and meditation is when we listen. When we pray, we use language to express our innermost thoughts and feelings to a higher power. Sometimes, we plumb the depths within ourselves and allow whatever comes to the surface to flow out in our prayer. At other times, we pray words that were written by someone else but that express what we want to say. Prayer is reaching out to the universe with questions, pleas for help, gratitude, and praise.

Meditation, on the other hand, has a silent quality that honors the art of receptivity. When we meditate, we cease movement and allow the activity of our minds and hearts to go on without us in a sense. Eventually, we fall into a deep silence, a place that underlies all the noise and fray of daily human existence. In this place, it becomes possible for us to hear the universe as it speaks for itself, responds to our questions, or sits with us in its silent way.

Both prayer and meditation are indispensable tools for navigating our relationship with the universe and with ourselves. They are also natural complements to one another, and one makes way for the other just as the crest of a wave gives way to its hollow. If we tend to do only one or the other, prayer or meditation, we may find that we are out of balance, and we might benefit from exploring the missing form of communication. There are times when we need to reach out and express ourselves, fully exorcising our insides, and times when we are empty, ready to rest in quiet receiving. When we allow ourselves to do both, we begin to have a true conversation with the universe.

Today’s Meditation

Rainbow Meditation

Colours are waves of light energy that have direct physiological and psychological effects. We can use them in meditation to influence our feelings and perceptions. To perform this meditation, choose a hue that represents the qualities, you would like to cultivate in that particular moment. Then cut a square or circle from a piece of paper or fabric in that shade and use the shape as a fous for your meditation.

Alternative, focus on a coloured object allowing the color rather than the form to dominate your consciousness, or visualize a colour, allowing it to fill your mind.

Elder’s Meditation of the Day – February 16

Elder’s Meditation of the Day – February 16

“One of the essential characteristics we need to learn as men was to be gentle, and to be gentle means to be serene, to enter meditation or a prayerful state in the morning and evening.”

–Larry P. Aitken, CHIPPEWA

The most important talk we can do during any day, is to start the day with prayer and meditation. We need to ask the Creator to be in our lives. We ask Him to direct our thinking. We ask Him for the courage and the power to be gentle. In the morning quiet time, we make our request for guidance using our spiritual tools. We pray for the people and we pray for ourselves. In the evening we thank the Creator for the day, for the lessons and for the opportunity to be of service to others. Then we go to sleep.

Great Spirit, today, show me the power of being gentle.

Celtic Magick Spell for February 16th – Rid Yourself of Negatives

Celtic Spell for Thursday, February 16th

Rid Yourself of Negatives

Set an empty cauldron or goblet on your altar between two lit white candles. Burn a good protection or blessings incense. Robe yourself, preferably in white, and stand or sit before the altar. Breathe slowly and evenly until you are calm and centered. Take the cauldron or goblet in both hands hold high over the altar in salute to the Gods. Lower to chest level and slowly breathe into the cauldron, silently naming each habit, person or experience you wish removed from your life

When finished, turn the cauldron or goblet upside down on the altar, saying:

“The contents of this vessel I give to thee,

Great Ones. Exchanges these experiences

for better.”

Place an offering of herbs and milk outside. Or at least burn the herbs in your censer. This is best done during the Waning Moon.

Today’s Affirmation for February 16th

I have a body but am not my body. I have a mind but I am not my mind. I have thoughts but I am not my thought.

Today’s Thought for February 16th

“If you cannot find the truth right where you are, where else do you expect to find it?”

Dogen (1200 – 1253)

Today’s Meditation for February 16th

Restore Truth

Our ability to perceive truth is often distorted by our beliefs. To raise awareness of your beliefs, meditate on a recent situation. Try to identify the beliefs that led to your actions. Now cast your mind back to your early years to learn the origins of these beliefs – perhaps in the messages given by parents a teachers. The greater your awareness of distorting beliefs, the more you will be able to perceive the truth.

In a similar way, meditate on the actions of a colleague or partner to gain greater understanding of their behavior.
